Coming this summer: Charles and Ray Eames Stamps

February 8th, 2008

I just found out that the U.S. Postal Service is releasing a series of 16 stamps to celebrate the amazing and unforgettable work of Charles and Ray Eames. The stamps will commemorate the work of the Eameses, who were design partners as well as husband and wife, and have made major contributions in many fields of design including industrial design, furniture design, art, graphic design, film and architecture.

The stamps are beautifully designed by Derry Noyes and include a broad range of images of the designers’ work, from the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman to a still from the “Tops” film. One of my favorite quotes/philosophies of Charles is: “The details are not details. They make the product.”

The stamps will go on sale June 17th and can be ordered online at usps.com.

And if you like Eames, then you may also be interested in Eero Saarinen, who designed some equally stunning furniture during the same era. Don’t miss the article in our March issue about the current exhibit of the furniture of Saarinen—including the iconic Tulip Chair—at the Museum of Design Atlanta.
